Newman Projection
It
is a way of writing the structure of molecule which represents conformation of
chemical bond. In this structure front carbon is denoted by dot and back side
carbon as circle.
Wedge Dash Projection
A wedge and dash projection is a way of writing organic molecule to represent three dimensional structures. The Wedge-shaped line represents bonds oriented towards the viewer and Dash line shows bonds pointing away from viewer. The Solid lines show that bonds are in the plane of the paper.
In this article we will see how to convert Newman Projection in to Wedge Dash structures and vice versa.
First we will see how to draw Wedge dash structure from Newman projection.
Consider Newman
projection formula of 3-fluorobutan-2-ol.

Let’s see the molecule right side. So that we will be able to see Sawhorse projection formula. |
|
After writing sawhorse projection
formula. Write the four members zig zag line. Here OH is at top left and F is
at bottom right. |
|
Now write Wedge and dash bonds. And
add the groups. The groups which are on front side write them on Wedge bond.
Whereas the groups which are on back side; write them on Dash bond. Here H (C-2) and CH3 (C-3) are on
front side so write them on Wedge bonds. CH3 (C-2) and H (C-3) are on back side
so write them on Dash bonds. |
We
will see some more examples;

Now
we will see how to write Newman projection formula from Wedge Dash bond
structure.
Let’s consider the structure of (2R,3S)-2-bromo-3-chlorobutane.
Suppose we want to draw Newman projection formula looking down C2-C3 bond.
Operations |
Structure |
Write the sawhorse projection formula of the molecule. And add both CH3
at top left and bottom right. |
|
The group which are on Wedge bonds; write them front side. Whereas the
groups present on Dash bonds; add them on back side of the plane. In this example; Br (C-2) and H (C-3) are on front side. H (C-2) and Cl (C-3) are on back side. |
|
Now hide the bond between C2-C3 to write Newman projection formula. |

will see some more examples;
